On Monday, Governor Katie Hobbs issued an executive order to protect and increase access to free and affordable contraception for Arizonans.

Under the executive order, over-the-counter birth control options like Opill will be made available at no cost to state employees. Reporting on the costs and benefits of requiring expanded contraception coverage for other health insurance plans will be required and AHCCCS will consider additional ways it can expand access to contraception for its members.

In response, Bré Thomas, CEO of Affirm Sexual and Reproductive Health released the following statement:

“We fully support and applaud this common sense measure from Governor Hobbs. Birth control is a right and must be treated as such. Protecting and expanding access to contraception is our second line of defense, especially at a time when the legislature was unable to pass the Arizona Right to Contraception Act after the Governor declared it a 2024 priority in the State of the State Address, and the future of abortion care in Arizona is uncertain.”
